Children in foster care may not have the proper luggage. It’s not uncommon for them to pack their belongings in a garbage bag.
Luckily, there are organizations that make sure kids in the foster system have the necessary items for their first night in their new homes. For example, Comfort Cases is a nonprofit that donates luggage and other items to youth in foster care.
Another organization is Day 1 Bags and Backpacks, which provides 27,000 bags nationwide in the last three years. They’re especially interested in backpacks for teens and young adults.
Another non-profit organization is Koinonia Family Services. Their mission is to help foster children in California and Nevada.
Mikey’s Luggage, a program started by former foster child Mikey LaRue, provides brand new suitcases to foster kids. The organization has a partnership with Les Schwab Tire Centers, which allows it to designate certain locations as drop-off centers.
In addition to providing new suitcases, Mikey’s also accepts used ones. His office will also donate them to a foster child if the child cannot afford to purchase one.
Arrow Child & Family Ministries is based in Baltimore and is committed to helping children and their families. A suitcase donation event is scheduled for May 2021. These bags are not only used by children in foster care, but also by their families.
There are other organizations that collect luggage for foster kids, including Sweet Cases, which gives overnight necessities to foster children.
