It’s the day before you leave for your vacation and your zipper breaks. Not only is that a huge bummer, but it could also mean that you’re stuck in your hotel room with no way to open and close your suitcase.
In many cases, a luggage zipper pulls replacement is all you need to get your zipper back in working order. There are a few ways to do this, from using a jump ring and a ribbon to sewing in a new zipper pull tab. You can even use a metal paper clip, a twist tie from garbage bags or a pipe cleaner for a temporary solution until you have the time to make a permanent repair.
Start with removing the old zipper slider from the zipper. This may be as easy as pulling on the zipper slider to release it or it could involve some seam ripping and a needle and thread or pliers. If the zipper has a top stop, cut it off and then remove the zipper teeth by gripping them above the mark with pliers and pulling outward. If your zipper has molded-tooth teeth, trim off the top portion of each tooth.
Next, insert a new zipper bottom stop over the missing zipper teeth. Flip the article of clothing inside out and tack the new zipper stop to the garment with a needle or thread or a sewing machine. You can also tack the new bottom zipper stop with a needle or thread, but this method is more permanent.
