American Airlines baggage fees are based on the destination of your flight and the class you fly. Premium cabin passengers and elite airline members can check up to two bags at no cost, while those traveling in domestic first or business class can bring up to three bags for free on certain routes. Check out our calculator to get a good idea of how much your checked luggage will cost with American.
Baggage Size and Weight Restrictions
Economy and basic economy passengers can check one bag per ticket at a cost of $50 each way (or $100 for international flights to Europe, Israel, or Cuba). The total linear dimensions of a bag must be under 62 inches to avoid a fee.
Oversized carry-ons can be gate checked for an additional $30 or $200 depending on the destination. This includes the size of handles and wheels. This bag from Boarding Blue fits AA’s free personal item dimensions perfectly and is durable enough to withstand baggage handlers.
Musical instruments can be checked as luggage on most American Airlines flights, but they must fit in the overhead bin or under the seat in front of you. They must also weigh under 165 pounds and be carried in a hard-sided instrument case. Service animals can be brought on flights for free, but they must be in a carrier that’s big enough for them to stand up, turn around and lie down in. Check with your flight to confirm if you can bring a service animal on board.
