A luggage zipper lock is an inexpensive, easy-to-use security measure to add a layer of protection to your purse, backpack or travel bag. It’s not foolproof, and a skilled thief may be able to get past it, but it may deter them from even trying.
Luggage zipper locks work by locking the zipper slides to an anchor at one end of the zipper track. This prevents the zippers from sliding apart and gives you more time to spot a potential thief before they have the chance to open the bag. Some bags (like this frame suitcase from eBags) come with these specialized anchor points, but you can also buy them separately and install them on any zippered bag.
If you want to go the extra mile, a TSA-approved luggage lock will also help safeguard your bag’s contents from theft. This lock features a flexible cable shackle to help ease it through zip tags and a strong zinc-alloy body. It’s resettable with a reset button and includes a 3-digit combination lock. TSA-approved locks are designed to allow the TSA to physically inspect your bag without damaging the lock or its contents.
Keep in mind, though, that TSA agents have master keys to unlock your bag, so they can still access the contents of your suitcase. If you don’t want to take the risk of losing your belongings or having them confiscated, consider purchasing a luggage wrapping service instead. They’ll wrap your entire bag in multiple layers of protective plastic film, and while it won’t stop the TSA from opening the bag, they will at least leave behind a note to tell you that they opened it.
